Old Medieval engraving showing the burial of a monk. Here the simple wooden coffin is being prepared. By the eighth century, burial in clothing had largely disappeared and most people were buried (as here) in a white cloth shroud that wrapped around the body. Members of the clergy were often buried with grave goods. In priest burials the body could be accompanied by a pewter chalice and plate. Bishops and archbishops were often buried in full ceremonial robes.
