Sherman halted at Gaylesville fora few days to live off the country and find out what Hoodwould do next. Hoods appearance on tlie railroad gave thegarrison at Chattanooga extra duty also. The 125th did con-siderable traveling by rail. Went to Ringgold on the 15th,returned on the 16th and went throughto Whitesides; next morning ran downto Bridgeport, and on the 18th ran backto Chattanooga and marched to the oldbattletield of Chickamauga, having thenovel experience on tliat day of eatingbreakfast in Alabama, dinner at Chatta-nooga, Tenn , and supper in on the 19th to Lafayette, onthe 20th to A^alley Store, and
