It isprobably safe to say that in the long run repair bills would be pro-portionate to the heating of the motors, and therefore that the re-pairs would vary as some function of the current used, and fromsuch data there might be estimated the corresponding saving inmaintenance which the 25 or 35 per cent reduction in current con-sumption would effect. An apparatus to give automatic control that. could be applied successfully and economically to the controllers ingeneral use has for several years been the subject of study andexperimentation on the part of the Carton-Daniels Co., of Keokuk,la., its device, the ,tomotoneer, being known to all of ourreaders. In 1902 the design of autoniotoneer that had given most promiseof success was of a form to be placed within the coutrdller. and. this was illustrated in the Daily Street Railway Review forOct. 8, 1902, page 631. Tests to determine what could be accom-plished in practice by the automotoneer were made by Messrs. D. W. B. Jackson on the lines of the Madispn (Wis.) Traction Co.,and published in the Daily Street Railway Review for Sept. 3,1903, page 600. The result of the Madison tests may be summarizedas follows: With a fairly careful motorman the device effected asaving of 714 per cent in energy consumption. The maximum cur-rent was reduced from 160 amperes to no amperes. Since the date of the tests reported more extensive experiments in Mar, 15, 1905.] STREET RAILWAY REVIEW. 181 actual service indicate that a design of antomotonccr that would beself-contained and could be placed outside of the controller offersa number of advantages. It is this new style of this device whichforms the subject of this article. As shown in Fig. I, the auto-motoneer is a simple piece of apparatus which slips over the shaftof
