MONTREAL, Canada - Montreal's Saint Patrick's Basilica. Built by French missionaries in 1947 for the city's Catholic Irish population, it features impressive and extensive use of wood internally.
The Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde, also known as the Basilique-Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde, is a historic Roman Catholic cathedral located in Montreal, Canada. The cathedral is a smaller-scale replica of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and is the third-largest church in Quebec. Constructed in the 19th century, it showcases a neoclassical and Baroque Revival architectural style. Designed by architect Victor Bourgeau, the cathedral was built in response to Bishop Ignace Bourget's desire to have a church in Montreal that resembled the famous St. Peter's Basilica. The cathedral's exterior features a colonnade and statues of patron saints from various parishes in Montreal. Inside, visitors can admire the impressive dome, the altar, the sanctuary, and the Coeur Immaculé de Marie, an elaborate wooden carving. Cathédrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde is not only a place of worship but also a significant religious and cultural landmark. Situated in the heart of downtown Montreal, near Place du Canada, the cathedral attracts tourists and locals alike for its rich history, stunning architecture, and religious significance. The cathedral's organ, built by Casavant Frères, is an important feature of the church, with its 4,000 pipes and 56 stops. The cathedral's interior also boasts beautiful stained glass windows and a variety of religious art pieces.
