BRUSSELS, Belgium — A waffle shop uses a mannequin of Mannekin Pis, a famous Brussels landmark fountain sculpture of a small naked boy urinating, to sell waffles.
Photograph by David Coleman. The Manneken Pis, one of Brussels' most famous landmarks, is a small bronze fountain sculpture located in the historic center of the city. Created in the early 17th century, likely by Hieronymus Duquesnoy the Elder, the statue depicts a naked boy urinating into the fountain's basin. Standing at just 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall, the Manneken Pis has become an iconic symbol of Brussels, embodying the city's sense of humor and independence. The statue is located at the junction of Rue de l'Etuve/Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat, a short walk from the Grand Place. Despite its small size, the Manneken Pis attracts thousands of visitors each year, who come to see the "little peeing boy" and often photograph themselves alongside it. The statue is dressed in costume several times each week, with a schedule of its outfits posted nearby. These costumes, numbering in the hundreds, are showcased in the nearby GardeRobe MannekenPis museum. The Manneken Pis is not just a tourist attraction but a beloved part of Brussels' cultural heritage, featuring in numerous legends and stories about the city's history. Its image is reproduced on souvenirs, chocolates, and even as larger replicas throughout the city, making it an enduring symbol of Brussels' playful spirit and rich folklore.
