A short history of engraving [and] etching : for the use of collectors and students; with full bibliography, classified list and index of engravers . 5fi. Fig. 33.—Hans Sebald Beham. The Prodigal Son. less careful of surface texture than the Behams, he generally uses amultitude of dots in helping out the lighter portion of his all his life was spent in Nuremberg, except for the shortterm of banishment, and possibly for certain visits to Italy. Hesucceeded better than most of his contemporaries in combiningsomething of the largeness of classical Italian painters with a stylewhich is still essentially German. Though he did some excellent Biblestudies— the Good Samaritan (B. 68), and the Story of To In t (), both of 1543—he was most at home with subjects of allegoryor antiquity, and in view of the circumstances of his life it is hardlysurprising that he engraved not a single plate of the Virgin andChild. Pencz has left a considerable number of portrait paintings, but the plate of Friedrich t/ic JJ7se (of 1543) is apparently his onlyengraved portrait.
