In 1876, Mr. Burke received his last appointment, as treasurer of theLowell Machine Shop, of which in his earlier years he had been the firstsuperintendent. Here he remained until declining years advised him thathis work as an active business man was over, and he resigned in his treasurership, almost every building was remodeled and enlarged,some new ones were added and the working force was largely Burke was frequently consulted on matters pertaining to cottonmanufacturing, and he was director of many of the most successful cottonmanufacturing corporations. He was one of the charter members of theNew England Cotton Manufacturers Association {now known as the. OF THE UNITED STATES 331 National Association of Cotton Manufacturers) and one of its first vice-presidents, from 1865 to 1873. He was one of the original corporatorsof the Mechanics Savings Bank of Lowell, Mass., and its first presidentfrom June, 1861, to June, 1886, when he retired. He took but little active part in politics, but served his city as aldermanfor two years during the Civil War. Mr. Burke was twice married, first to Catherine French, of Bedford,N. H., by whom he had five children; and second to Elizabeth Mary Derby,who survived him, but died in February, 1900. Mr. Burke died in Lowell, Mass., May 28, 1887, at the age of seventy-six years.
