Detroit, Michigan - Environmentalists and residents of southwest Detroit block a truck carrying petcoke to a dump site in their community. Petcoke (petroleum coke) is the residue after Canadian tar sands oil is processed at the nearby Marathon Petroleum refinery. After a standoff lasting several hours, the truck turned around without dumping its load. Mary Waters (left), a former Michigan state representative and breast cancer survivor, joined the protest because she wanted no one else to endure environmentally-caused cancer.
