Amusement Park in Hamburg – DOM.
Hamburg's DOM - this is a piece of hanseatic City's tradition which enhances around nine million visitors every year. Hamburg's DOM - that is the biggest fun fair in the North with a guarantee for fun nostalgia an thrills galore. Hamburg's DOM finds it's origins back in the 14th century. The former Marien-Dom (St. Mary's Minster) offered refuge from wind and weather to traders and craftsmen as well as travelling players and quack doctors. Theses worldly colourful going-on were a nuisance to the responsible bishop, Burchard Archbishop of Bremen, who turned the showmen out. In 1334 he told the stall holders to stay out of the church or face excommunication. His flock resented that however. The citizens of Hamburg have always been "funny" about their traditions; atypical hanseatic understatement, meaning it was in fact no laughing matter. And not even an archbishop can make them change their minds. The upshots was that Archbishop Burchard not only decided against excommunication people but in 1337 even expressly allowed the traders back into the Dom (Cathedral), however only when it was cold, wet and windy outside. So the fair remained in the Dom until the building was demolished in 1804. The Traders and showmen then roamed though Hamburg's districts - without a fixed location. This was not granted to them until 1893 with the est Omen: Hamburg's fair today is still called "DOM" after the original location. The Winter DOM (Dommarket) was joined in 1947 by the Summer DOM (Hummel Festival) and since 1948 there has also been a Spring DOM (Spring Festival) on the Heiligengeistfeld. The three events in Spring, Summer and Winter make the Hamburger DOM the largest an longest of its kind in Germany. Each of the three DOM fun fairs is opened by three cannon salutes by a member of the Hamburg Senate. With a mixed program of music, show and clowns visitors - whether young or old - are invited to celebrate. Beer for free and a lot of surprises bid the first v
