Sam Ting (born 1936), Chinese-born American physicist. In November 1974, Ting & his group at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, discovered the J/psi particle, the first known particle containing a charm quark. Ting shared the 1976 Nobel prize for physics for this work with Burton Richter, whose group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center discovered the particle at the same time. Ting is seen with the graph that revealed the existence of the J/psi, & with members of his group behind him.
