Skin nodules. Eyelids of a 50-year-old woman with pale plaques (nodules) due to xanthelasma. These swellings result from the deposition of fat in the skin, and are termed xanthomata. They are common in the elderly and of little more than cosmetic importance. In younger patients they are an indication of high blood cholesterol (as in this case). This hypercholesterolaemia must be treated as it may cause coronary heart disease.
