But the most significant and epoch-making member of this group of new services wasthe White Star Line. Before that time thesteamer had merely continued the practice of thesailers and they the practice of the merchantships of the ages. These vessels had put thecrew in the forecastle and more elegant quartersfor captain, officers, or passengers were erectedin the stern of the ship. So in the steamer; butthe White Star Oceanic ended all this for thebetter class passengers by appearing with cabinsamidships, where the motion in all directions isminimized in the same way that there is littlemotion in that part of a seesaw-board that restson the fulcrum.
