African elephants (Loxodonta africana) drinking at a waterhole. African elephants drink daily, sucking up water with their trunks and then squirting it into their mouths. They also enjoy bathing in and around waterholes, covering their skin with mud for protection from the Sun. These social herbivores inhabit the savannah and forests of sub-Saharan Africa, living in family herds ruled by an elderly matriarch. They are the largest land animals, adult males reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight. Photographed in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
