The old academy of Philadelphia was restored to allits rights and privileges by the Act of 1789, and amongthe students an association was formed for the study ofthe law. They were without a teacher or any regularcourse of study, but had attracted to themselves thenotice of the trustees of the Academy by a request thatthey might hold their meetings in one of the rooms of thecollege. This request, made in 1789, was granted, andthe fact that a regular course in the study of the law wasneeded became manifest. Mr. Charles Smith, editor of theedition of the early laws of Pennsylvania, now known asSmiths Laws, applied to the trustees of the college for anappointment to a professorship of the law in that institu-tion.
