Open-pit coal mining Jaenschwalde near Cottbus, Lower Lusatia, Brandenburg, Germany. Huge open-pit coal mining by the Swedish concern Vattenfall on the site of the Sorbian village of Horno (Sorbian: Rogow) near Cottbus, Lower Lusatia. The Janschwalde Power Station is seen in the background. The power station fires raw brown coal from local open-pit mining. Approximately two dozen of Sorbian villages were demolished in order to clear the space for open pits. The village of Horno was demolished in 2007 and the Sorbian inhabitants were resettled from here to a new location.
