Pancreas anatomy. Cut-away computer artwork of the pancreas, which secretes digestive enzymes and the hormones insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels. The digestive enzymes are produced and secreted by acinar cells (yellow). Hormones are secreted from islets of Langerhans, which contain two types of cells. Alpha cells (blue) secrete glucagon, which converts glycogen back to glucose and so increases blood sugar levels. Beta cells (red) secrete insulin, which converts glucose to its storage product glycogen, and so reduces blood sugar levels. The pancreatic duct is purple and the bile duct is green.
