The main wagon road is over the BulwerBridge. The original centre span to this bridge was shot away by the NavalGuns at Chieveley on the 19th December, 1899, in order to hamper the enemysmovements after the Colenso disaster. The number and the strength of thesangars and gun emplacements running along each side of the road for milesconstructed by the Boers in anticipation of the relieving column forcing apassage this way are particularly interesting. The point of attack of General Harts Irish Brigade is two miles alongthe South bank of the Tugela to the West of Colenso. HARTS HILL was the first of the three famous Pieters Heights attackedby the ill-fated Irish Brigade on the 23rd, and held with such tenacity untilvictoriously carried on the 27th February, 1900.
