But these were probably the sacred robes for the statues of the Gods(Plut. de Is. s. 78); and the priestsmay only have been forbidden to wearcotton garments while in the votaries of Isis at Rome were sub-ject to the same prohibition, and linendresses were adopted by those who hadbeen initiated into the mysteries ( Is. s. 3; Apul. Metam. lib. xi.). TheEgyptian and Jewish priests were theonly ones (except perhaps those of India)whose dresses were ordered to be oflinen. That Λvorn by the former was■of the finest texture, and the long robewith full sleeves, which covered thebody and descended to the ankles, wasperfectly transparent, and placed overa short kilt of thicker quahty reachingto the knees.
