Perianal abscess. Close-up of a ruptured abscess on the skin near a 54 year old man's anus. An abscess is an inflamed pus-filled infection in a soft tissue. Due to its location it is usually very tender and can cause painful bowel movements. The most common cause is infection by Staphylococcus bacteria, although other microorganisms may be responsible. Treatment is with surgical drainage of the pus and a course of antibiotics.
