Consid-erable interest is added to the journey by thenumerous ruins of huge Spanish churches andconvents, and the old Spanish forts scatteredalong the coast. For those who wish for something strange,something new and something different fromthe usual tourist routes, a trip over the trailsinto the innermost heart of the mountains canbe well recommended. It is true it is necessaryto forego the luxuries and some of the con-veniences and comforts of our nicely ordered 89. 90 MANILA 91 modern life, but the experience and pleasuregained amply justify these sacrifices. The main trail is fairly wide and of goodgrade. It follows along the upper heights ofthe main central mountain range of Luzon, inplaces reaching an elevation of 8,000 feet andpassing from side to side of the mountain ridge. The trails are maintained by the Governmentand at present are the only means of communi-cation available to the officials, missionariesand teachers who are engaged in the administra-tion and development of the Mountain Provinceand the education and conversion to Christi-anity of the so-called wild tribes.
