Male chacma baboon, Papio ursinus, yawning and displaying his long, pointed canines. Chacma baboons are among the largest of these monkeys. A mature male can reach over a metre in height and around 50 kilograms in weight. Adult baboons have a distinctive, elongated snout. They are powerful creatures, feeding on animals up to gazelle size (including small monkeys), as well as eggs and plant material. Battles between a baboon and its natural predator, the leopard, have been reported to be mutually fatal. Baboons are social animals, living in troops roaming the African steppes and savannah.
