Meningioma causing bulging eye. Face of a 55 year old woman showing a slightly bulging eye (or proptosis, at right) caused by a meningioma, a type of benign tumour. A meningioma is a tumour arising from the arachnoid membrane, one of the membranes which cover the brain. The tumours do not invade brain tissue, but may cause symptoms by pressing on vital structures. Symptoms include headaches, nausea and impaired mental functions. As the tumour is not part of the brain tissue, surgical removal is relatively simple.
