Originally constructed in 1866, Union Market served at St. Louis's premier grocery market for the next fifty years. By 1883, the city of St. Louis owned seven such markets, but Union Market continued to outshine the rest in terms of updates, selection, location and patronage, leading one 19th century writer to claim, 'one of the sights of this city is the crowds, the light, the display and the traffic at Union Market, especially on Saturday evening.' By the turn of the 20th century haphazard additions led the market to be declared 'a disgrace to the city,' and in 1924 a new Union Market was opened just up the block from the original location.
