Thermal expansion measurement. 19th-century illustration of an apparatus used to determine standards for measuring thermal expansion of metals. The device incorporates thermometers and troughs of hot and cold water. Micrometers mounted on lengths of platinum and copper allow precision measurements of the expansion of these metals due to temperature changes. This apparatus was used by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Sevres, France. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
