Handicrafts in the home . experimenting in chemicals, and makingdesigns, who have no love of the actual work-ing in metal, so that this craft is especiallywell suited to such people. r CHAPTER VPOTTERY-MAKING THERE are numerous opportunities foiadding beautiful decorative pieces oluseful pottery to the home, in the way ollamp bowls, candlesticks, dishes for flowersor fruit, and all kinds of decorative jardinieres, and it seems well worth while to learn howto make these at home. Now that so many interesting clays can beobtained, requiring only an addition of water, the making of pottery comes within the scopeof the most unenlightened worker. A fewsimple potters tools, a board, rolling-pin, ancwater are the only requisites. The materia!is moistened with water, and is kneaded on ;board to give it plasticity. It is then rollecwith a rolling-pin. I will describe how the simple lamp vaseis being made by the worker in our illustra-tion. After a large piece of moistened cla)for the bottom of the bowl has been kneadec 30. BUILDING UP A PIECE OF CLAY, THE LEFT HAND SUPPORTS THE SIDESWHILE THE POTTERY IS SHAPED U&UBf 1 n POTTERY-MAKING 31 until it is about an inch thick, small piecesare taken in the hand, and the sides gradually-worked up and added to, until the whole isbuilt up. The left hand is held inside, andsupports the sides while the clay is beingadded. Tools made on purpose for pottersare used for shaving the pieces, but the bulkof the work is done with the hands. Thispiece of pottery is somewhat crude, but verydecorative. The illustrations show pottery made in thisprimitive manner. When the clay has slightlystiffened it can then be decorated by beingcarved with a sharp tool, or a decorative edgecan be cut out like the one in the group withthe square candlestick. In order to make a small bowl, take a lump( f clay and work the knuckles into it until itassumes the form of a birds nest. This willsave a good deal of shaping when building upthe sides.
