Monastic cells and balconies, Rila Monastery, Bulgaria
Rila Monastery is Bulgaria's largest and most renowned monastery beneath the Rila Mountains. It is the most revered holy place in the country and one of the country's major tourist attractions. Ivan Rilski founded Rila Monastery in AD 927. It was originally built about 3km away but moved to the current site in 1335. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Nativity Church is the largest monastery church in Bulgaria. The church, with its three great domes, was built between 1834 and 1837. The outside of this church is covered with dramatic and colourful frescoes.
