This late 19the-century illustration shows boys in New York City applying to the superintendent at the Water Street Mission for a night's lodging. In 1872 businessman Frederick Hatch bought the property in Lower Manhattan that became the Water Street Mission. He had met Jerry McAuley and put him in charge of this new venture - America's first Rescue Mission.
