Both keelswere laid on April 10, 1896, and both vessels werelaunched at the same time, March 18, 1897, and theywere both completed and delivered to the governmenton June 12, 1897. These vessels are alike, 189 feet inlength over all, 34 feet beam, and 21 feet 9 inchesmolded depth; mean draft of water, 12 feet; dis-placement. 1,000 tons. The batteries of these gunboats consist of sixfour-inch R. F. guns for the main battery, four six-pounder R. F. guns, two one-pounder R. F. guns, andone Colt gun for the secondary battery. These gunboats have given excellent service. TheMarietta accompanied the Oregon on her famous tripfrom the Pacific to the Atlantic, and that performancewas overshadowed by the work of the big ship; buthad the Oregon not been there, the work of the gun-boat would have been notable. The Wheeling has alsodone notable service on the Asiatic station. In 1896, the Union Iron Works prepared plans for atorpedo-boat destroyer on the invitation of the NavyDepartment. This vessel, afterward named the Far-ragut, was contracted for on October 5, 1896. He
