Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea in flight hovering over wild flowers on Inner Farne part of the Farne Islands in on the Northumberland coast.
Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) hovering above a nesting area on Inner Farne off the Northumberland coast. Photographed from a distance with a long lens the nest is not visible in the vegetation but tern nests are generally placed in small depressions on the ground. The nests are potentially vulnerable to predators consequently the Arctic Tern is quite an aggressive bird during the nesting season and will vigorously defend its nest by swooping and pecking at any intruder.
