Rivello, in the southern Apennines, province of Potenza, region of Basilicata, southern Italy, is a centre for arts and crafts and has long been known for its exquisite working of copper and gold, and for its religious architecture. It is also a gastronomic centre and has a growing Slow Food movement. It is positioned on the summit of three hills: Motta, Serra and Poggio in the valley of the River Noce and dominated by Monte Sirino. Dates from the 6th C AD Lombard period as a fortified border town for the territories of the Dukes of Benevento, constantly threatened by the Byzantines because of its strategic position. Much of the architecture shows a Byzantine influence. The Normans took over in the 11th C and the Swabians in the 13th C. In 1268, the town and population took sides during the Ghibilline Revolt. Damaged by 1980 earthquake. Population: 3,000
