Itssurface is somewhat undulating, but on the whole it exhibits a slightslope towards the west or south-west. On this floor are heaped up suc-cessive beds of sands, marls and shales of Cretaceous age, constitutingall the older rocks seen in this area west of the lakes. These form,under the glacial deposits, the entire mass of the Duck and RidingMountains, and extend from them westward across the Assiniboineand under the Great Plains to the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
