Theyseemed to be fully as numerous as in certain parts of theAmazon valley, which, since the time of Bates, has been thefavorite hunting-grounds for these beautiful insects by en-tomologists from all parts of the world. In the immediatevicinity of Rio de Janeiro, there are no fewer than eighthundred species of butterflies. Among these are many rep-resentatives of the wonderful celestial blue Morpho, someof which have an expanse of wing of no less than seveninches. As seen floating through the perfumed air of thedim solitudes of the tropical forest, I could well fancy themas the sylphs of the morning basking in the sunshine, oras the elves of eve seeking their home in the poetess, Jane CatuUe Mendez, brings them before usin all their beauty
