The masseter muscle consists of a superficial portionand a deep portion (Fig. 15). The superficial portionarises from the anterior two-thirds of the lower border ofthe zygoma. It is inserted into the lower part of the 56 APPLIED ANATOMY outer side of the ramus of the mandible. The deepportion arises from the posterior third of the lowerborder of the zygoma, and from its entire inner is inserted into the upper portion of the outer sideof the ramus of the lower jaw. The nerve-supply ofthe masseter muscle is derived from the mandibulardivision of the trifacial. The superficial portion of the. ^11^ a. The internal pterygoid vcmscle (Fig. 16) arises from theinner surface of the external pterygoid plate and ptery-goid fossa of the sphenoid bone, and from the tuberositiesof the palate and maxillary bones. It is inserted intothe inner side of the ramus and angle of the mandible. MUSCLES AND FASCIM 57 The nerve-supply of the internal pterygoid is derivedfrom the mandibular division of the trifacial.
