A marked trait is his fearless inde-pendence, which leads him to shun the pursuit of even woithy endsby unworthy means. With no other early education thanJ^^l^ that aiforded by the common schools, he was placed, as soonas he could be of service, at work in a cotton factory of which hisfather was the overseer. He afterward learned the trade of a m:ifcliinist. Joining a dramatic company which was formed among hisassociates, he plajed the prominent parts with so much success, thathe had inducements oifered him to adopt the profession of an preferring another stage, he lectured before political meetings,lyceums, and temperance societies, and afterward became editor of anewspaper in his native place. He was in request as a speaker inthe jiolitical meetings of the Democratic party, and for his servicesreceived an othce under Polks administration in the Boston CustomHouse.
