Close up of a New Zealand takahe an endangered flightless rail

The takahe is a large, flightless rail, endemic to New Zealand. Thought extinct in 1898, it was rediscovered in 1948. Some 200 individuals now survive, on offshore islands and in their original habitat in Fiordland.
