Asit approaches the gateway, this avenue is divided by agroup of trees, but unites again directly in front of theentrance. The gateway at this entrance is of somewhatimposing dimensions, the whole structure having a frontof one hundred and sixty feet. The carriage Avay isthrough an Egyptian portico, copied from an ancient por-tico at Garsery, on the Upper Nile. On each side, a lit-tle removed, are smaller gates for pedestrians, and near. Upon the outer architrave of the gateway are inscribed,in golden letters, the words,— THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATHI WILL FEAR NO EVIL. On the interior architrave, in the same kind of letters, arethe words, — I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. Consecrated June 28, 1848. The gateway and lodges are built of wood, painted andsanded in imitation of Jersey sandstone. There are other entrances on the southern and easternsides of the cemetery. On the southern side the cemeterygrounds do not extend to any public street, but an avenuethirty-three feet wide is laid out from Walk Hill Street tothe boundary of the cemetery, where there is an entrancethrough a gate supported by Egyptian piers.
