Charles Andre Joseph Marie De Gaulle, 1940. De Gaulle (1890-1970}, French soldier, statesman and author in uniform as a General. During WWII he was leader of the Free French and in 1944, after the liberation, he became head of the provisional government. In December 1958 he was elected first president of the Fifth Republic.
