A noted ath-lete, he achieved thefeat of gaining a tripleblue in hockey, tennisand cricket. Inhockey he achievedwider fame, beingchosen to play forScotland in -inter-national matches in1912, 1913 and graduating Newton at once joined theArmy, receiving a commission in the 1 August 1915.
