On quite a number of street rail-ways, however, a 7-ft. tie has been adopted in place ofan 8-ft. one, and on the Detroit (Mich.) United Rail-ways a 6-in. x 1 0-in. x 6-ft. 8-in. white-oak tie is usedexclusively. It has been found that when odd lengthsor sizes are purchased in large quantities usually the 6 in. x 8 in. in section, but most street railways are pur-chasing them of special lengths so as to eliminate thedifficult tamping experienced with the standard-length tiesinterlaid to meet track conditions.
