A live oak tree, battered from Hurricane Katrina, stands on a vacant lot amid a field of goldenrod, October 15, 2014, in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. In the foreground is part of a concrete wall that once surrounded the property. The house, along with most of the houses along the beach, was destroyed during the hurricane, and many property owners have been unable — or unwilling — to rebuild. Goldenrod is the state flower of Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina. It was the state flower of Alabama before being replaced by the camellia. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
