In temperate countries, the most important is the sugar beet; but as it is a more expensive source of sugar than is the sugar-cane, it would be foolish to grow this ]:)lant in the Philippines. Another very large beet is cultivated as a food for cattle. The garden beet has a thick, red root, which is cooked in various ways, and is a very nourish- ing food.
