Mardi Gras Indians in full dress
Mardi Gras Indians are African-American Carnival revelers and musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by American Indians. They parade on a number of occasions, including Mardi Gras, St. Joseph's Day (called "Super Sunday"), the Jazz and Heritage Festival, and others. A Mardi Gras Indian character based on real Mardi Gras Indians plays a prominent role in the HBO miniseries Treme. Mardi Gras Indians have been parading since at least the 19th Century. They sew their costumes by hand, substantially modifying the costume each year.
