Paralysed voice box. Endoscope view of the paralysed larynx (voice box) of a patient, showing the right arytenoid cartilage. This patient has suffered a unilateral (one-sided) paralysis of the right side of the larynx. The condition has a number of causes, including cancer of the larynx or surrounding tissues, an injury sustained during surgery or other unknown factors. It results in a hoarse, breathy voice. Treatment includes speech therapy and surgery. The arytenoid cartilage lies at the back of the larynx and is attached to the vocal cords.
