Gen. Sweet, who had charge of thecamp at the time, first had his suspicions of dangeraroused by a number of enigmatically worded letterswhich passed through the Camp postoffice. A de-tective afterward discovered that the rebel was in the city, under an assumedname, and he, with other rebel officers—Grenfell,Morgan, Cantrell, Buckner Morris, and CharlesWalsh—was arrested, most of whom were convictedby a court-martial at Cincinnati and sentenced toimprisonment,—Grenfell to be hung. The sentenceof the latter was afterward conmiutcd to imprison-ment for life, and all the others, after nine monthsimprisonment, were pardoned. In March, 1873, Gov. Yates was appointed a Gov-ernment Director of the Union Pacific Railroad, inwhich office he continued until his decease, at , Mo., on the 27th of November
