An Apis bull, perfumed with oils and decorated with garlands, marches in a procession in Memphis attended by priests and others.

In ancient Egypt, the Apis bull represented the god of creation, the necropolis, and hopes of rebirth. The Apis bull was kept in Memphis and a new one was immediately sought when the presiding one died. Shown in this illustration dating to around 1900 is an Apis bull, having been perfumed with oils and decorated with garlands, marching in a procession in Memphis (the center of the Apis bull cult) and attended by priests and others. Note the representative sun disk between the bull's horns.
