Misty trees, blue tour bus parked at the Chile-Argentina Border Gate, international route CH-225, Paso de Perez Rosales, Andes

In the 19th century most commerce from Bariloche, at the eastern end of the Chile-Argentina Lakes Route, came and went through the Chilean sea port of Puerto Montt. In 1896, for instance, it took three days to reach Puerto Montt, whereas it took a month or more to reach the Atlantic Coast. My tour guide told me that before the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the Lakes Route, over the Andean Paso de Perez Rosales, was an important commercial artery between the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts.
