The bars or balusters instead of beingvertical are horizontal (Key XIII, 4; Fig. 1, D, F andG; Fig. 2, A and B) and joined to the uprights insteadof running from top rail to rear seat rail. The turnedlegs of these late chairs are sometimes splayed outwardat the feet (Fig. 2, A and B). The backs at the end ofthe century are also lower and more squat (Key XIII,4; Fig. 2, A and B, and Fig. 9). SOFAS OR SETTEES Sheraton sofas, or, more properly, settees, were par-ticularly graceful and satisfactory pieces of Fia. 3. Sheraton Sofa. They followed the same structural and decorative prin-ciples as the chairs. Caning was used both for backsand seats in many chairs and settees (Plate XXXIII,p. 244), and in some of the caned settees the backs wereagreeably diversified by an alternation of caned panels 248 PRACTICAL BOOK OF PERIOD FURNITURE with narrower latticed or balustered panels (Fig. 1, B).The upholstered settees sometimes had latticed or bal-ustered arms and sometimes were wholly upholstered(Key XIII, 7). They were usually long and had eightlegs (Key XIII, 7; Fig. 3; Plate XXXIII, p. 244). BEDSTEADS Sheraton bedsteads, like Hepplewhite bedsteads,usually had simple testers covered by valances (KeyXII, Fig. 4).
