One of Whitby's landmarks above West Cliff, is a Whalebone Arch. On the opposite cliff is St. Mary's Church and the ruins of Whitby Abbey above the historic town in Whitby, North Yorkshire, Britain Whitby, a seaside town and small fishing port is on the north Yorkshire coast, facing the North Sea. Whitby is associated with Royal Navy Captain James Cook, voyager and discoverer of Australia where he learned his seamanship in the harbour, the horror novel of Dracula and the famous Whitby Jet black and alum found in the surrounding cliffs.
