The Martyrs' Memorial stands on Cliffe Hill in the East Sussex town of Lewes. It commemorates the 17 protestant martyrs burned to death in the town between 1555 and 1557 during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary. They were burned at the stake in the centre of Lewes near The Star Inn, now the Town Hall. The granite obelisk was erected i1901 at a cost of £900 met by public subscription. An annual commemoration service is held in June and is organised by the Commemoration Council who also maintain the monument. Access is difficult as the monument is approached either by a private estate or Lewes Golf Club. This image shows the inscribtion on the monument.
