A defensive tower at the ancient silver mine workshop ruins area, at Lavrio

The mines at Lavrio (ancient Thorikos) were a major source of income for the ancient Athenian democracy. They provided silver to fund the construction of triremes, walls and other buildings. Thousands of people both slaves and free, worked at the mines, extracting, enriching and melting ore to produce silver and lead, for many centuries. Remnants of the facilities still exist.
